COMMUNITY MEDICINE

A New Outreach Program

Image

Sandoval County has expanded health and public outreach services to residents with a new program, Public Health and Safety Outreach, or, Community Medicine (CM). Offered by Fire and Rescue Emergency Medical Services and Community Services, CM strives to help individuals meet their long-term health goals by making home visits, providing specific health-related information, and sharing local medical and social resources with residents. This is especially helpful for those living in our more rural communities with limited access to services.

Community Medicine also helps with Fire Prevention Home Inspections, Emergency Calls for Service, and connecting participants to transportation services, and acts as liaison to local clinics and providers to coordinate participant health care needs. In other situations, CM will partner with Sandoval Regional Medical Center and the Behavioral Health Coalition’s Mobile Behavioral Health Unit.

    HOW TO REACH COMMUNITY MEDICINE

If you think that you, a family member, or a friend could benefit from these services, reach out directly to the two firefighter/paramedic members of Community Medicine. There is no charge and an initial home visit establishes participation in the program. Both team members are firefighter/paramedics and have completed the 100-hour Community Healthcare Worker Program certified by the State of New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH).

    HOW WE H.E.L.P.
Community Medicine is for the benefit of the entire community. In addition to engaging with residents in their homes, CM conducts CPR for all ages, First Aid, and Stop the Bleed courses and offers other health-related and harm-reduction education to the public. The team also participates in health fairs, and public outreach and school education events throughout the County. Further, Community Medicine builds upon HELP, an existing program.

    SHARP BOXES
One outreach effort of HELP is the recently installed Infectious Waste Sharps Disposal Bins. These collection boxes, dedicated to household, human sharps only (syringes used for human injections). These boxes can be used by residents and individuals or others with NMDOH Harm Reduction affiliated community organizations.*
