JEMEZ RIVER FLOODING INCIDENT ONE MONTH LATER
Last month, rapid snowmelt and swift water caused the Jemez River Flooding Incident that affected several communities in northwest Sandoval County. A state of emergency and disaster was declared (April 12, 2023) and Sandoval County along with other governments, agencies, communities, and contractors mobilized quickly to mitigate damages to roads, riverbanks, and bridges. Sandoval County Public Works remains dedicated to the repair caused by the flooding. Here are updates on their efforts on two critical projects.

HIDDEN VALLEY BRIDGE IN LA CUEVA
The bridge in this neighborhood was damaged beyond repair during the Jemez River Flooding Incident. The County closed the bridge immediately for the public’s safety and established a detour. This detour will remain in place until the new bridge construction is finished. (Conservative estimate for completion is May 2024.) View detour map.

JEMEZ SPRINGS WASTEWATER PLANT, Village of Jemez Springs
Rushing flood waters cut into the banks of the Jemez River and broke the main wastewater line. This then sent river water, mud, and rocks to the wastewater treatment plant causing a plant shutdown. Service to residents was never interrupted because the Village of Jemez Springs and Sandoval County took quick measures to haul the wastewater from the plant to another location for treatment. There were several mandatory repairs needed for the plant as flood waters, rocks, trees, silt, and more poured through the plant’s system. At this time, it is operational with additional remediation taking place.
